Wisdom: What is it? Who is it? How do we get it?

Wisdom is something greatly sought after and desired, both Biblically and philosophically. Together we will look at the many different ways wisdom is discussed and presented in scriptural, philosophical, and worldly views. We will also look at specific types of wisdom, such as Divine Wisdom, Wisdom Literature, and Wisdom personified as a human woman.

Dean’s ForumChrist’s Final Week

Over the five nights of our Lenten program we take an in depth look at Christ’s last week on earth leading to his crucifixion. A central source for this class will be the book The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus’ Final Week in Jerusalem by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. This book focuses on the accounts of Jesus’ last week as found in Mark’s Gospel, which is the Gospel we are using in Year B. Other sources will include A Preface to Mark: Notes on the Gospel in its Literary and Cultural Settings by Christopher Bryan.

Class led by Dean Andy.

Music Forum—Lenten Miniature Musical Masterpieces

We will view Lent through a musical lens as we explore miniature masterpieces of the season. As we listen, discuss, and examine the historical and liturgical contexts of these works, participants will gain a deeper spiritual connection with this season of reflection as we await the joy of Easter. We begin the five-week course with musical settings of Psalm 51 and end with musical depictions of the crucifixion.

Class led by Music Director Paul Meier.

Dean Andy will lead a meditation on the Advent Gospels on Wednesdays in Advent: Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23. The program will consist of a meditation in which participants will listen to the four gospels for Advent, Year B, and begin to picture themselves within the story. Each session will use images and music associated with the Gospel for that particular week. The Gospel will be read several times through as you focus on the art displayed and music being heard. This will be followed by a short reflection and time for quiet meditation and, finally, discussion. The goal of this more contemplative form of studying the Gospels is for all participants to begin to internalize the symbols of Advent and prepare a place in themselves to receive, once again, the Christ child into their hearts and lives.

Dean Andy is now leading a class called Lord, teach us to pray.  Prayer has always been important to the Church, both corporately and individually. It is especially important right now as we continue to live during this time of pandemic and amid civil and social unrest. How should we pray? What should we pray? In our time together we will begin with the question the disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” (Lk 11:1b) Jesus taught them what we now call The Lord’s Prayer. We’ll explore this particular prayer together as well as different types of prayer as described in the Book of Common Prayer: adoration, praise, thanksgiving, penitence, oblation, intercession, and petition. Handouts are available below.  The class begins with a check-in at 6:45 p.m. (new time) and class runs from 7–8 p.m., followed by Compline.
