| As a deacon in the Church, you are to study the Holy Scriptures, to seek nourishment from them, and to model your life upon them. You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by your word and example, to those among whom you live, and work, and worship. You are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship and in the ministration of God’s Word and Sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties assigned to you from time to time. At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ’s people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself. (BCP, 543) These words help begin the examination portion of the ordination service for a deacon. Clare will be there to hear these words tomorrow morning as she will be presented for ordination. The next thing the bishop will do after saying the above words is ask Clare if she believes she is truly called by God and the Church to the life and work of a deacon. We, and the Church, hope that answer is “yes!” The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka, Kansas. Then, on Sunday, following the 10:30 a.m. service, we will have a special coffee hour to wish Clare the best in her new ministry as a transitional deacon. Summer is in full swing with lots of events and activities planned at the Cathedral. I hope you received a card in the mail with the full schedule. There are extra copies in the back of the Nave if you would like one or would like to hand them out to others and invite them to join us. We have parish breakfasts, priestly ordinations (including CJ), and a movie night complete with popcorn. I know that summer is a time for travel and vacations, but I hope that when you’re in town you will join us for all we have happening at the Cathedral. The first event is our garden workday tomorrow from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Please bring gloves and help weed and spruce up our grounds. Next up is our pulpit swap with Grace Cathedral, Topeka, next Sunday, June 29. Dean Torey will be preaching at the 8 and 10:30 services at Grace and Holy Trinity, and I will preach both morning services in Topeka. I will be back to preach and preside at our 5 p.m. service. My thanks to Dean Torey for suggesting the idea. Please continue to pray for one another, for our Cathedral family, the nation, and the world. |
