Almighty God, Creator of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

This is one of the additional prayers found in the Rite II Burial Office. It came to my mind as we heard the agonizing news of another mass shooting – this time at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My heart goes out to all the children and families who were in church to celebrate the Eucharist for the opening of a new school year. Two children were killed and 17 others seriously injured. It also came to mind last Sunday with news of two people killed and three others injured by gun violence in the Power and Light district in downtown Kansas City. We must continue to speak out against gun violence, advocate for better mental health, and work together to protect all people. Please pray for all those affected by these senseless acts of violence.

We have a lot coming up in September:

  • Our Ministry Fair will be after both morning services on Sept. 7. Come see what volunteer opportunities are available. Also, backpack and Back to School blessings at the 10:30 service.
  • Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Nave: An Evening of French Music with vocalist Eva Peng and pianist Dr. Anthony Olson.
  • A Wicket Wonderland Croquet Tournament: Saturday, Sept. 13, 12-5 p.m. Sign up to play or just come watch and enjoy the day.
  • Newcomer Gathering on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 11:45 a.m. in the Common Room. For all those new to the Cathedral, come join with clergy and others to learn more about the Cathedral and how to get involved.
  • Choral Evensong returns on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.

This weekend is also Labor Day weekend, so the office will be closed on Monday.
Please continue to pray for one another, for our Cathedral family, our nation, and the world.
