What is Rite II? Most worship services in the Episcopal Church come in two versions: Rite I and Rite II. Simply put, Rite I liturgies are descended from traditional Anglican liturgical forms, and even retain some of the traditional English that dates from 1600s (lots of “thy” and “thou”). Many people prefer the historical liturgies and more traditional language. Rite II services date from the writing of the current Book of Common Prayer in the 1970s and use contemporary, everyday English.  If you would like to compare, look at the Book of Common PrayerWe use Rite II for regular worship throughout the year.

What to Expect During a Service

Photo of the Nave

Our services include songs, Bible readings, prayers for ourselves and others, a sermon, and communion. The 10:30 a.m. services have an opening procession, choir and hymns.

You may notice some movement by other worshippers—standing, kneeling, perhaps making the sign of the cross. If you are new to a tradition that uses formal prayers and liturgy, we encourage you to participate without any concern for “doing things correctly.”

Children

Children are welcome in all our services. God put the wiggle in children. Don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church! Age-appropriate activities are available on a shelf in the back aisle.

Cathedral Kids meets during the first half of the 10:30 a.m. worship service and during this time we weave together our sacred stories and our Episcopal identity with the Weaving God’s Promises curriculum. Children attending Cathedral Kids will meet their parents or guardians inside the tower doors during the passing of the peace. Once a month, we observe Family Worship Sundays. These Sundays provide an opportunity for families to worship together. Worship Boxes with resources for children are in cabinet in the back cross aisle.

What to Wear

Wear clothes … and shoes. You will see clothing types from casual to business professional. You are welcome as you are.

Communion

All are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those who do not wish to receive, may come forward for a blessing. Gluten free wafers are available.
