From the Desk of Dean Andy • 05.23.2025

I am so grateful for our youth and children at the Cathedral and so enjoyed our Youth Sunday last week. Many thanks to Clare and all those who participated in the service. There was such an energy and spirit present during the whole service, and it was a joy to be part of it.

Congratulations, again, to all who have graduated this year, including Clare. As I mentioned on Sunday, Clare was graduated last Saturday from the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry with a certificate in Anglican studies. This was the final step in her preparation for the ordained ministry. It also means her time with us is drawing to a close as she has been called to a new position in the Diocese of Kansas. Clare’s last Sunday with us will be June 1. This is the same day she will start as the Curate for Campus Ministry, Canterbury, at Kansas State University. She will not be moving from Kansas City but will commute for a few days during the week. Congratulations, Clare, I am excited for you and so appreciative of your work and ministry with us at the Cathedral. Clare’s ordination to the diaconate will be June 21, 10:30 a.m. at Grace Cathedral in Topeka. Please join me in wishing Clare all the best. (Read Clare’s letter)

Prior to all of this, may we remember and celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, giving thanks for all those who gave their lives in the service of our country, and whose spirits now rest in the light and presence of the Almighty. Our prayer book commemorates those who gave their lives in a prayer found in the Rite One Burial Office:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in whose hands are the living and the dead:
We give thee thanks for all thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country.
Grant to them thy mercy and the light of thy presence;
and give us such a lively sense of thy righteous will,
that the work which thou hast begun in them may be perfected;
through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Amen.

May we all continue to give thanks for those who have given their lives for our freedoms, and who now know the perfect freedom of everlasting life with Christ. I will be participating in an Interfaith Memorial Day service on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, East Truman Road, Kansas City.

We have several other events coming up in June: Pride Mass and Pride Parade on June 7, Wear Orange Sunday on June 8, and our Parish Picnic also on June 8, the Feast of Pentecost. Visit our website for details and sign ups on our upcoming events.

Please remember to pray for one another, for our Cathedral family, for our nation, and the world.
